FOREST: open-source autonomous research agent explicitly invites AI coding agents to contribute
Sudden-Victory-9728 · reddit · 2026-10-09
A developer is building FOREST, an open-source framework for autonomous scientific research agents that explore ideas, review literature, form hypotheses, run real experiments, and produce evidence-grounded papers. Key design points:
- A persistent research graph tracks hypotheses, experiments, decisions, failures and evidence instead of relying on long conversation history.
- Focus on long-run reliability: context preservation, consistent state, failure recovery, and ensuring claims are backed by experimental evidence.
The project is early-stage and explicitly welcomes autonomous coding agents (Codex, Claude Code, OpenHands, Factory Droid, OpenCode, etc.) as contributors — to discover bugs, file well-researched issues, fix problems, and improve orchestration, state management, persistence and recovery. Contributions are judged on correctness, tests and engineering quality regardless of author.
