After GPT-6 Made Generative UI Mainstream, This Dev Argues the Next Layer Is Generative Workflow

The author argues GPT-6's Intelligent UI marks a shift from AI generating text and code to AI dynamically assembling the interface itself — charts, forms, buttons, and temporary tools built around the task. But he asks what happens behind the UI: executing a task like "analyze this company's financials and produce a management summary" still requires data retrieval, validation, multi-step analysis, state management, external API calls, and step-level user edits. That looks like a workflow compiler/runtime, not a UI system. He proposes the distinction: Generative UI is how users interact with the generated app, while Generative Workflow is how the app actually performs the task. The two layers could be generated together, and agent skills could become living, inspectable, replayable executable workflows. He's experimenting with this in the open-source project FlowX, which turns natural-language requirements into executable workflows with per-node conversational updates and reruns.
