Grady Booch: even in humans, consciousness has no clear threshold — sleep, anesthesia, infancy
Grady_Booch · x · 2026-10-09
Continuing his X thread on consciousness, Grady Booch notes that there are times he is undeniably not conscious — asleep or under anesthesia — and that infant-development research similarly asks when consciousness emerges in a human.
His takeaway: even within an organism he knows to have the capacity for consciousness, he cannot easily say when that threshold is crossed, reinforcing his view that consciousness is a spectrum rather than a binary.
