DiscoLoop: fixing looped Transformers' implicit reasoning bottleneck with explicit decoding
berkeley_ai · x · 2026-10-09
Amid rumors that frontier labs are adopting looped Transformers for implicit reasoning, this work uses mechanistic interpretability to show why looping helps implicit reasoning but fails to generalize. The authors identify a bottleneck and introduce DiscoLoop, a residual design for looped Transformers that forces explicit token decoding between looped modules, enabling generalizable multi-hop reasoning.
