SEO researcher Aleyda Solá analyzed citations used by ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode across ten topics in the US, UK, Spain and Brazil, using a localized prompt library to see which sources each platform surfaces per market.
Key findings: local domains (measured via ccTLDs .uk, .es, .br) account for 41.4% of citations in Brazil, 38.3% in the UK and 24.0% in Spain. The platform with the highest local share varies by country, and local share also differs substantially by topic.
She notes ccTLDs are a proxy that may undercount locally targeted sites. The takeaway for international AI search optimization: how much AI engines cite local sources varies significantly by market, platform and topic.
