Five failure cases to test before trusting a multi-agent coding workflow
matimatthews · reddit · 2026-10-09
A builder working on Backplane shares a design checklist for multi-agent coding workflows: (1) change the requirement after review — completion records should track both code revision and requirement version; (2) let a worker lose its claim then return — stale writes must be rejected without silently overriding the takeover agent; (3) lose the response to an external write — use idempotency or reconciliation, and surface uncertainty instead of letting the model invent success; (4) approve one action then change its scope — the boundary must verify actual target against what was approved; (5) restart without the original conversation — the next worker should resume from a known checkpoint. The goal: distinguish "a run ended" from "this result was accepted against the current task."
