ChatGPT's Intelligent UI Reverse Engineered in Under 24 Hours, Replicable with Local LLMs
Mr_BETADINE · reddit · 2026-10-09
ChatGPT's Intelligent UI (generative UI) was reverse engineered in under 24 hours using only public traffic and the site's JavaScript: the agent never writes raw code — it emits DIL, a new language, compiled server-side, streamed, and rendered natively via a client component set.
The same team released Open Intelligent UI, an open-source framework (a jab at OpenAI no longer being "open" — they own openui.com) to recreate the experience in your own apps. Since openui is model-agnostic, it works with local models via ollama or LM Studio, though not one-click out of the box.
The post also maps the generative UI spectrum and trade-offs:
- Composing from a predefined component library vs generating full interfaces on the fly (HTML/React in an iframe)
- Related projects: openui, Vercel's -render, Google's a2ui, and ChatGPT's Intelligent UI
- Different balances of flexibility, reliability, performance and model freedom
