Shotty: a free, open-source Rust menu-bar screenshot and recording tool for macOS
debreuil · x · 2026-10-08
After Setapp removed the Jump app, a developer audited his subscription, kept only CleanShotX and TablePlus — and open-sourced his own CleanShotX alternative: Shotty, a free MIT-licensed macOS menu bar capture tool written in Rust.
- Three shortcuts: ⇧⌘4 area capture with frozen screen (menus/hover states stay put), ⇧⌘3 full screen, ⇧⌘5 recording; keyboard-driven, nothing leaves the Mac unless you press Upload.
- Built-in annotation editor: arrow, rectangle, highlighter, text, auto-numbering steps, pixelation, crop — each tool on a single key, full-resolution clipboard copy.
- Record, trim, share: frame-accurate trimming, compact MP4/HEVC/GIF export (a 16.6 MB raw clip compresses to 2.1 MB).
- Requires macOS 15+, available on GitHub. The author bought a TablePlus perpetual license and canceled Setapp.
