Economists build an 'open paper' demo for the AI age: interactive data, everything shared
paulnovosad · x · 2026-10-08
Economist Paul Novosad's team built a demonstration of what an 'open scientific paper' could look like in the AI age, using their study on the childhood socioeconomic circumstances of Nobel Laureates.
Key ideas:
- All heterogeneity tests are shared interactively instead of authors hand-picking one or two for appendices;
- Raw data is posted and explorable on site;
- Intermediate data-construction steps are visible and re-runnable;
- AIs can easily remix and reanalyze the work.
Practical advice: don't just dump a CSV — design how readers can best explore the data, and share early to prove claims withstand scrutiny.
