go-harmony: a developer's algorithmic take on music theory, plus a forthcoming book
jedisct1 · x · 2026-10-08
- @PoolpOrg has been writing a music theory book from a developer's perspective since 2022: deriving the rules algorithmically rather than taking them on faith, revisiting a decade of lessons through the lens of algorithms. The book is finished, in final review, and will be self-published.
- It comes with go-harmony, an open-source Go music theory engine (ISC license): no hardcoded lookup tables — the engine doesn't know what a C7 chord is, but recomputes the third, fifth and dominant seventh relative to C as a stack of intervals; scales are derived the same way. It's a foundation library for other tools, still a work in progress.
