agentc: a minimal C coding agent under 1 MB with MCP and a versioned C ABI
prasannavl · reddit · 2026-10-08
A Reddit user released agentc, a minimal, extensible coding agent in C built around the question of what an agent's extension surface should be. External capabilities go through MCP over stdio (with capped exponential backoff reconnects), while in-process tools, providers and models use a versioned C ABI. Extensions can link statically or load at runtime on macOS/Windows; C and Rust reference extensions are included. Session state is JSONL, config is JSONC, and the result is a single static binary under 1 MB with no libc — 0.7 MB RSS at startup, 2–4 MB idle. MIT licensed, with binaries for Linux (x64/arm64/riscv64), Windows and macOS (arm64); Linux is tested end to end while the other two have only run in CI.
