Open-source bridge turns a browser chat tab into an OpenAI-compatible API endpoint
harshanacz · reddit · 2026-10-08
Developer harshanacz released claude-bridge-server, a small Node server plus a Chrome extension that lets any OpenAI-API-speaking tool borrow an already-logged-in web chat interface.
How it works:
- Tools send standard requests to /v1/chat/completions.
- The server relays each request over WebSocket to the extension, which types the prompt into an open chat tab and streams the reply back.
- Run locally or host it (author uses Render's free tier) and call it remotely with an API key; the browser with the tab must stay open.
The author flags it as an unofficial hobby experiment: it depends on page structure and handles one chat at a time. Directly useful for anyone wanting to substitute a subscription web chat for API payments.
