MCP server drives a real vehicle CAN bus — agents can read and transmit live frames

A commercial desktop app ($333, free trial) embeds an MCP server wired to real vehicle CAN buses. The agent filters live traces, diffs capture windows, analyzes unknown CAN IDs and proposes signal definitions, fits scaling factors, builds charts, and even transmits frames onto the bus. A virtual bus mode lets you exercise the whole MCP surface without hardware.

Protocol design: Tools for operations; Resources expose session state (canoli://adapter, database, project, trace) so the agent pulls context without burning tool calls; Prompts surface multi-step workflows (discover unknown signals, triage anomalies, auto-decode IDs) as slash commands in Claude Code.

Two defensible design decisions: the app measures, the model interprets — bit-boundary detection, checksums, and anomaly detection are deterministic code returning facts, while the model names things and forms hypotheses; the author explicitly didn't want an LLM guessing signal boundaries. Docs as a tool — searchdocs and gethelp serve the real user guide over MCP so the agent reads documentation instead of improvising.

Open concern: transmit is in the tool surface, so an agent can put frames on a live bus that moves real hardware; it's currently gated like the rest of the app, which the author admits isn't a long-term answer.
