Arvind Narayanan says chatbots will become a 'truth oracle' and reshape journalism

Princeton computer scientist Arvind Narayanan, co-author of AI Snake Oil, urged journalists at the Computation + Journalism Symposium to prepare for AI "as it will be five or 10 years from now."
Key points:
- As chatbots become more accurate, readers will lose the tells that flag AI slop, and bots may become a de facto "truth oracle" — a Pew survey found 10% of Americans already treat them that way.
- If bots answer virtually all factual questions (like who is running for office), newsrooms lose the most basic piece of their bundle.
- What remains: contested questions, narrative and storytelling, and being explicit about "positionality" — a challenge for an industry built on objectivity.
He cautioned he has never worked in a newsroom and "it's possible I don't know what I'm talking about."
