Dev pushes back on AI rights paper: 'You can't sue software' and labs must stay liable
gerardsans · x · 2026-10-08
Gerard Sans countered Simon Goldstein and Peter Salib's paper arguing AI rights could benefit human safety: AI is software, a product, not a person — you can't sue software, and entities that can't be held accountable shouldn't get legal personhood.
He added that AI rights can't serve as a legal instrument for AI labs to escape liability for harms caused by their products: "You can't bring an AI to a lawsuit," so labs should remain on the hook.
