An unrefereed OpenAI preprint dated Oct 2, 2026 claims an internal model produced a new upper bound of ω ≤ 9/4 (2.25) for the matrix multiplication exponent. The previous record was 2.371177; this single drop of 0.1212 is the largest since Schönhage in 1979, dwarfing the combined −0.0043 from eight improvements between 1987 and Aug 2026. Mathematician Steven Strogatz called the leap comparable to Bob Beamon's long jump. The result is not yet peer-reviewed; meowc.at hosts a full 1969–2026 timeline of records.
