Rejected by his crush, he used Bayesian reasoning to become an ML researcher
tensorqt · x · 2026-10-08
An AI researcher recounts how he entered the field: at 19 he was nearly non-verbal socially, and after embarrassing himself with a crush he rebuilt his life from scratch — even eavesdropping on roommates and writing a "Theory of conversations" file, jokingly reinventing looksmaxxing before it was cool.
He then spent a summer deriving a "theory of love" from memories of past crushes and others' relationships, built on assumptions like convergent interests and good faith. That journey led him to probabilistic inference research in 2023, long after most had left the field.
