Will humans keep their 'unearned' aesthetic islands in an AGI world?
danfaggella · x · 2026-10-08
Dan Faggella responds to the claim that unless we suppose grey goo, the future will still have islands of 'unearned' aesthetic value—like peacock feathers or royal gardens.
He pushes back on two points: such value is not 'unearned' but earned by fulfilling the preferences of a custodian, just as a dog earns its place by pleasing its owner; and while agreeing these islands will exist, he argues it is very precarious to assume they will be occupied by humans-as-they-are forever.
