Tracking LLM API model deprecations and rolling alias changes across providers
shamikhan005 · reddit · 2026-10-07
Handling model deprecations when calling LLM APIs (Gemini, Qwen, OpenAI, Kimi, etc.) in production is a real operational problem:
- Worst case: rolling aliases like "latest" silently repoint to a newer snapshot with no warning or changelog entry
- Common strategies: manually watching provider deprecation pages, pinning dated versions, setting up alerts, or fixing only when prod breaks
- The author built a small experiment that scrapes deprecation dates and rolling-alias changes from each vendor's own docs for cross-provider tracking
They're asking whether this is a widespread pain point or if most people just pin a version and move on.
