UTokyo Uses Differentiable Rendering to Optimize Free-Form 3D-Printed Lampshades

Researchers at the University of Tokyo (Hiro Nakasuji, Soma Yokota, Yutaka Ohtake, Yuki Koyama) present a computational design method for 3D-printed free-form lampshades with controlled illumination, e.g. uniform luminance.
- Conventional lampshades are limited to simple geometries because optical functions are hard to control over complex shapes.
- Given an arbitrary shape, the method determines the internal cavity geometry plus the number and placement of lights.
- A two-stage pipeline: initialization fixes light count and initial positions/cavity, then gradient-based optimization jointly refines cavity geometry and light positions via differentiable rendering under geometric constraints.
