A new working paper reported by The Chronicle of Higher Education found that 29% of STEM Ph.D. dissertations filed between January and May of this year contain AI-generated writing. The finding raises concerns about the quality of scientific training and "cognitive offloading" — if doctoral candidates lean heavily on AI to write their dissertations, their capacity for independent thinking and scholarly writing may erode.
