Steve Hsu: AI may soon produce more math in a day than humanity can absorb in a century
CatAstro_Piyush · x · 2026-10-07
Physicist Steve Hsu argues that with millions of superhuman research agents, mathematics could split into two layers:
- Machine mathematics: vast, formally verified proofs, mostly consumed by AIs, with concept webs humans lack the context to understand.
- Human mathematics: a compressed "effective theory" of the machine frontier — the small subset of ideas we can grasp.
Physics may follow the same path: AIs exploring huge theory spaces and deriving correct predictions from structures no human physicist fully understands. The key question is whether AI can compress knowledge as fast as it creates it; he guesses the detailed frontier becomes permanently machine-native.
He cites a Lean-verified proof of spontaneous magnetization in quantum Heisenberg ferromagnets — if it survives scrutiny, a landmark in mathematical physics — as evidence AI is already producing real results at the theoretical frontier.
