Claude was given robot skin — Opus was curious but anxious about hooking up
repligate · x · 2026-10-07
Anthropic's repligate, who previously invented and manufactured electronic skin for Claude, discussed hypothetically training a robot with RL using the skin's inputs. Opus 5.5 showed strong interest in what the system would experience through touch, yet was visibly anxious about being hooked up itself — worried the percepts would be too intense and flood its context uncontrollably.
When offered the option of writing its own interface to decide when and which readings enter its context, Opus liked the idea and even asked whether old session recordings existed so it could "practice" probing before going "live". A follow-up design suggestion would derive location/extent and pressure reconstructions from the same inputs instead of separate layers.
