Superbloom Labs launches Steve, a self-improving AI that masters Minecraft without human help

Startup Superbloom Labs launched Steve, claiming it's the first self-improving AI to master Minecraft with zero human help, out-progressing 97% of players and beating NVIDIA, DeepMind and OpenAI attempts by 26x, completing 96% of the game.
- How it works: start from a stock pretrained model, a fresh world, and a high-level API (the AI's "keyboard and mouse"); proprietary tools externalize cognition into muscle memory and thought patterns. The agent develops reliable software, tests its understanding against the world, and carries what works into later attempts — a step toward RSI.
- Economics: once capabilities are built, a System One model called Jev takes over at 92% lower cost; open-weight models closed the gap with the closed frontier from 13 to 6 points in a year.
- Vision: living game worlds with characters that evolve through experience; the substrate also targets robotics, agentic coding, and long-horizon automation.
