Grady Booch: LLMs Are Single-Column Systems vs Brain's 2-4M Cortical Columns
Grady_Booch · x · 2026-10-07
Grady Booch argues frontier LLMs—roughly 100 layers of recurrent, embedding, normalization, feed-forward, and attention structures—are essentially single-column systems, fundamentally unlike biological brains: cortical columns (3 layers in reptiles, 6 in humans) number 2-4 million in humans, each with 50-100 mini-columns of 100 neurons, connected vertically and horizontally.
