Dev open-sources AutoType, a free Wispr Flow alternative for Linux voice typing
premakin · reddit · 2026-10-07
- Tired of Wispr Flow's subscription, the author built AutoType: a free MIT-licensed voice-typing daemon for Linux (tested on Mint XFCE + X11)
- Interaction: double-tap Right Alt to talk, floating waveform pill, cleaned text pasted into the focused window
- Vendor-agnostic stack: STT via Deepgram, Whisper (OpenAI/Groq) or NVIDIA NIM, or fully offline with Parakeet GGUF; cleanup LLM can be OpenAI, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Qwen, Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint
- A deterministic normalization pass before the LLM handles spoken punctuation, newlines, bullets and vocab casing so formatting isn't hallucinated away; clipboard backup/restore, GUI settings, raw mode skips the LLM
- No account, no telemetry; fully local path costs nothing. Wayland support is the known gap (xdotool dependency)
