Reddit debate: AI writing value is all in the first draft, editing judgment stays human
Cold_Mud2650 · reddit · 2026-10-07
A Reddit user shares their take after daily AI writing tool use: the value sits almost entirely in the first draft — give a rough brief and a usable structure appears in seconds. But the hard part of writing and design was never the first pass; it's deciding what to cut and which angle matters, a judgment call models handle poorly because they have no stake in the outcome and no sense of your audience.
The work shifts rather than disappears: less time staring at a blank page, more time arguing with a confident draft that wants to keep everything. Sometimes the trade is worth it; sometimes editing a mediocre draft is slower than writing a lean one yourself. The author asks whether the first-draft speedup is a net gain or gets eaten back by editing burden.
