The terminal era may be ending: agents, not files, become the basic unit of coding
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-10-06
The author argues terminals are the wrong interface for coding agents: terminal tabs are ephemeral while agent context persists, and managing 30 tabs just adds cognitive load. IDEs matter less too, since humans rarely need to browse the whole codebase anymore.
The new basic unit is no longer the file but the agent. Codex desktop may currently be the best agent interface, but this paradigm is still in its early days.
