a16z 7th Top 100 Consumer AI Apps: only 4.5% of Americans pay for ChatGPT/Gemini/Claude
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-10-06
a16z released the seventh edition of its Top 100 Consumer AI Apps, adding a first-ever spending ranking based on US card data from YipitData:
- 9 of 15 consumer internet categories—streaming, social, dating, gaming, travel, retail, finance, real estate, hiring—still have no AI product in the Top 100
- Nearly half of US consumers use AI, but only 25% daily; just 4.5% had an active paid subscription to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude as of August
- The top 10% of spenders account for roughly half of all observed spending, favoring coding, productivity, and creative tools
- Only 11 products debuted this edition, the fewest across all seven lists
Takeaway: consumer AI usage is wide but shallow, and the first real market is power users paying heavily for tools that help them build and create.
