Rust Campfire rewrite needed ~300 commits to match vibe-coded Elixir/Go, josevalim calls out dhh's benchmark
evilsocket · x · 2026-10-06
josevalim pushed back on dhh's AI-generated multi-language Campfire experiment: the initial vibe-coded Rust version had req/s in the same order of magnitude as the initial Elixir/Go versions, sometimes worse. The repo history shows the Rust version only got fast after 300 commits of extra work, versus 2-3 commits for the Elixir/Go versions it was compared against. dhh's original point stands: Ruby was slowest, but he valued the productivity and developer joy — asking what performance even means when nobody reads the code anymore. The full benchmark harness and history are open-sourced in basecamp/once-campfire-rust.
