Atoms aren't conscious, humans are: the 4-step syllogism where every school of mind philosophy breaks
ctjlewis · x · 2026-10-06
A widely shared post boils the "Hard Problem" of consciousness down to a 4-step syllogism:
- Atoms aren't conscious
- Humans are made of atoms
- Humans are conscious
- So at least one of 1–3 must be false
- Panpsychists reject #1 (atoms have some consciousness)
- Dualists reject #2 (humans aren't just atoms)
- Illusionists reject #3 (consciousness is an illusion)
- Materialists reject #4 (the inference itself is flawed)
The reblogger argues the flaw lies specifically in the logical leap to step 4, not in the premises — stressing he isn't assuming consciousness equals information processing, just testing whether the argument holds for something already known to be true.
