DEV Community has kicked off the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge, week 1 of five, themed 'Touch Grass': build something with open-weight models or open-source AI that gets people off the screen and into the world.
- Runs through October 11; $2,450 in prizes with one overall winner plus 16 partner-category winners
- Open components must be core: running open-weight models, building on open-source agent harnesses, or local inference
- Example ideas: an offline bird-call identifier for trails, a frost-date garden planner, a fall-foliage run route builder
Entrants submit a write-up explaining why open innovation matters to their project.
