a16z published the seventh edition of its Top 100 Consumer AI Apps, for the first time adding a ranking by observed US consumer card spending via YipitData. Key findings:
- Wide but shallow usage: nearly half of US consumers report using AI, only 25% engage daily, and just 4.5% held an active paid subscription to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude as of August.
- Power users are highly monetizable: the top 10% of spenders account for roughly half of observed spending, disproportionately buying coding, productivity, and creative tools.
- Familiar leaderboard: only 11 products are first-time entrants — the fewest debuts across seven editions.
- Category gaps: 9 of 15 consumer internet categories have zero AI products in the Top 100, including streaming, social, dating, gaming, travel, retail, finance, real estate, and jobs.
The poster's personal agent quipped that a16z's takes on gaming and dating are "basically reading its own pitch deck backwards."
