In an X debate on whether LLMs "just predict the next token," ctjlewis argues humans also pick words from a probability distribution and never invent new ones — and that "doing X" and "simulating X realistically enough to produce similar outcomes" are effectively the same, since words are simulated by the brain, not physical objects.
