a16z released the 7th edition of its Top 100 Consumer AI Apps list, and partner Olivia Moore argues consumer AI has its business model inverted versus internet history:
- Nearly all consumer AI revenue so far comes from direct subscriptions: 85% of list apps monetize via subscriptions, 62% via credits or extra usage payments
- Only 13% use ads or other "you are the product" models
- The biggest consumer tech companies historically make most revenue from ads or transaction fees, since most people won't pay for software
- ChatGPT is already in the global top 20 consumer subscription products after just 3.5 years; almost all others are media companies
Spending is heavily concentrated among power users (developers, creators); the discussion also covers the rise of personal agents.
