Hustle Fund investor Elizabeth Yin kicked off a thread with one of her favorite stories: in 2010, a scrappy Canadian startup raising its Series A had shareholders who believed the best outcome was a mere $50M sale, since Canada had never produced a big internet exit. That company was Shopify, now worth roughly $100B.
She uses the case to argue that great founders come from anywhere, that great companies aren't only built where VCs cluster, and that they're often easier to find in less competitive markets.
