What Is College When AI Can Teach? The Case for Residential Education
begusgasper · x · 2026-10-05
The author argues that when knowledge, teaching, and advising are available from machines, the answer lies in residential education—students living, eating, and socializing together to learn to be bold, original, and uniquely human.
He traces the model back to Plato and Aristotle's schools 2,400 years ago: gardens and walking paths where students discussed and socialized, not just classrooms. Just as Socrates feared writing would give the appearance of wisdom without substance, today's AI anxiety mirrors that dynamic—and the residential model answers many challenges AI poses to academia.
