The Australian Council of Trade Unions has joined UNSW's AI Institute, AIML, and the Kingston AI Group in a joint statement calling for a government-coordinated national effort to build Australia's sovereign AI capability.
- Sovereign AI means Australia can build, adapt, evaluate, and operate AI on compute and data infrastructure it owns or controls, even if foreign services are disrupted
- AI used in Australia should be accountable to Australian law, retain economic value locally, and share gains fairly with workers
- The statement echoes the Prime Minister's warning that Australia must be "much more than a data warehouse for AI products made overseas"
- Cites comparable sovereign-AI investments in Singapore, Germany, Japan, Canada, Korea, and the EU
