Economists Debate Whether AI Will Do Economic Research in Its Own Format
paulnovosad · x · 2026-10-05
In an exchange with Alex Tabarrok, economist Paul Novosad suggests that even if AIs end up doing all economic research, it may be best done in their own format, separate from spaces where humans write to each other.
The debate stems from Tabarrok's critique that most papers no longer begin from an author with a good idea trying to express it, but from authors without one, dressing it up in jargon and 'over-the-top AI precision' to make it look good. Tabarrok replied simply: 'Not to worry, this will change.'
