Veteran dev: AI cuts 3-4 week projects to 1-3 days, but engineering judgment still matters

A web developer who grew up from the dial-up era shares that commercial projects once taking 3-4 weeks can now ship in 1-3 days with AI — not because AI replaced engineering, but because it accelerated implementation. Planning, architecture, testing, security, and knowing when the model is wrong still matter.
He criticizes how the debate reduces AI to LLMs and then to either "magic" or "slop," and calls out hypocrisy in the AI-slop discourse: people who use AI themselves mock others for it, and outsiders dismiss indie devs' fast shipping as slop. AI-assisted work and low-quality work aren't the same thing.
His bigger reason for optimism is science — AI already in math, research, and specialized decision systems. The real question isn't "will AI write my emails?" but "what happens when useful intelligence becomes cheap enough to put everywhere?"
