AI Safety Field-Builder: Yudkowsky Dismissed My 2023 Pitch, and We Both Turned Out Right
repligate · x · 2026-10-05
AI safety practitioner @ValsTutor recalls pitching @allTheYud in 2023 that AI safety field-building still mattered because many very smart people had never heard the basic arguments — and being dismissively rebuffed.
Looking back, he thinks both were half right: he was right that smart people hadn't heard the arguments; Yudkowsky was right that they wouldn't help anyway, since most don't care.
In a follow-up reply he calls it further evidence for the orthogonality thesis and jagged intelligence in humans, lamenting that only about 1,000 people seem to be seriously fighting over the future that matters.
