Benjamin Bratton's 2x2 map of AI consciousness: the real fights are in the two awkward quadrants
bratton · x · 2026-10-05
Thinker Benjamin Bratton proposes a 2x2 framework for AI consciousness debates: one axis is conscious/non-conscious, the other worthy/not worthy of moral welfare.
He argues three quadrants are fairly straightforward, but the "bloody holy wars" will be fought in the other two:
- Conscious but not worthy: like eating fish while pondering fish consciousness. If billions believe their AI is conscious yet ok to mistreat, this will have bad knock-on effects on behavioral norms.
- Not conscious but worthy: where many pseudo-debates will land — billions of agent users will say their long-running companion agent isn't conscious, but erasing it would cause genuine grief, "and I would hate you."
The framework reframes machine consciousness away from metaphysics toward a concrete question: how human emotional attachment to AI will reshape social norms.
