51% of surveyed UK novelists fear full AI replacement; 85% expect earnings to fall

A University of Cambridge report, The Impact of Generative AI on the Novel, surveyed published British novelists on generative AI:
- 51% believe AI will likely replace their fiction-writing work entirely
- 39% say generative AI has already hurt their income
- 85% expect their future earnings to decline
The study was led by Clementine Collett, BRAID UK Research Fellow at Cambridge's Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, and published with the Institute for the Future of Work. It stresses that the threat extends beyond manuscripts to freelance assignments, rights over published work, and authors' connection with readers.
