David Krueger: "regulating AI will crash the economy" is an unexamined bad meme
DavidSKrueger · x · 2026-10-05
AI safety researcher David Krueger pushed back on the popular claim that regulating or pausing AI would "crash the economy." He argues it's a bad meme and likely false: market corrections would likely have smaller systemic impact than imagined, and OpenAI and Anthropic in particular are still private companies.
He notes most people repeating the claim have made no serious effort to verify it. Such "truisms" are common in AI discourse; he urges epistemic vigilance — keep track of what you have strong reasons to believe versus just-so stories heard a billion times.
