Hinton, Bengio join paper warning AI R&D automation could trigger an intelligence explosion

A new paper, "What If Automating AI R&D Triggers an Intelligence Explosion?", co-authored by Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, Dawn Song, Jack Clark and other leading researchers, examines the societal risks of automating AI research.
Context: Anthropic and OpenAI are both actively automating AI R&D. Anthropic's AI R&D Automation Index shows Claude leading 26% of its R&D work as of August 2026, with over 90% at or above the "AI collaborates" level; OpenAI says it has built an "automated research intern" and aims for an automated researcher by March 2028.
Core claim: An intelligence explosion is defined as an AI-driven acceleration compressing years of progress into months, with systems rapidly eclipsing human experts.
Three risks: capabilities outpacing society's ability to steer, loss of oversight and control, and erosion of checks on power.
Policy proposals: gain visibility into companies' R&D automation, develop ways to steer and constrain such an explosion, and prepare to adapt to its impacts. The authors argue the risks warrant urgent global governance action.
