Micro entities and individual inventors are far likelier to use AI in patent applications, new paper finds
robseamans · x · 2026-10-05
A paper by robseamans with Nikhil Dilip and Youngkyung Kim examines how AI has affected patent applications. Early finding: micro entities — very small firms and individual inventors — are much more likely to use AI in their filings. An initial version was posted in Feb 2026 and has since received substantial updates, now available on SSRN. The result suggests AI tools are lowering barriers for small inventors and could shift the balance of the patent ecosystem.
