Engineer pushes back on the Platonic Representation Hypothesis hype
gerardsans · x · 2026-10-04
Quanta Magazine recently covered MIT's "Platonic Representation Hypothesis" paper: as models scale, they appear to converge on similar internal encodings of the world, evoking Plato's allegory of the cave.
The author, an engineer with two decades of AI systems experience, publishes a critical essay arguing the narrative mistakes statistical convergence for metaphysical truth, and criticizes an industry where researchers rarely revisit fundamentals—"operators, not inventors."
