Is functionalism about Claude circular? A substrate debate on X
ctjlewis · x · 2026-10-04
allTheYud argues from a functionalist view that Claude could in principle run on water in pipes: divide system properties into those affecting I/O (weights storing "Paris is in France") and those that don't (power supply mass, silicon vs carbon), and substrate becomes irrelevant given a fixed algorithm. ctjlewis agrees with the framing but calls the argument circular — it presumes you can swap out the substrate mechanics and get identical outputs, which substrate-matters skeptics (who think intelligence needs some special physical basis) would dispute.
