Students cheated with LLMs on a zero-stakes oral exam, professor says
ipeirotis · x · 2026-10-04
NYU professor Panos Ipeirotis ran an oral exam where students discussed already-graded work with a voice AI agent. It was pass/fail, the only requirement to pass was simply showing up, and answers didn't matter.\n\nEven with nothing at stake, a few students still cheated: in the recordings he heard 20–30 seconds of silence after each question, keyboard typing in the background, then a perfectly fluent answer — presumably read from LLM output.\n\nHe says he understands cheating when incentives exist, but this zero-reward cheating left him depressed. He hadn't prohibited LLM use or pursued honor-code charges, comparing it to asking a friend to fake your Strava run: why would anyone do that?
