Jin: a minimalist coding agent that swaps MCP/plugins for prompts and bash
aldapsiger · reddit · 2026-10-04
Dissatisfied with Claude Code, OpenCode, pi, and omp, a developer built Jin (v0.6, open source), a minimalist AI agent, and explained the key design decisions:
- Support only the 3 most popular API standards instead of hundreds of providers, so new models work immediately via a proxy (easyclipoxyapi) rather than waiting for plugin updates
- Replace Skills/MCPs/plugins with prompts: #prompt for reuse, hooks injected into the system prompt; MCPs are handled by installing their CLI clients and describing usage in a hook, with the agent calling them via bash
- Async background tasks: the agent can keep npm run dev running, and can launch itself through async to create ready-made subagents
